IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION
It is the intent of the LaSalle Parish School System to provide educational opportunities for all students. It is imperative that an atmosphere be created in which students and teachers interact without interruptions from disruptive students. It is the duty of the administration to provide disciplinary procedures which:
Encourage students who misbehave to modify their behavior, and,
Limit the amount of interruption to other students.
Suspension from school removes the disruptive student from the classroom but does little to modify behavior. In addition, the student gets further behind in the classroom which often contributes to further misbehavior.
OBJECTIVES:
To provide an alternative to out-of-school suspension.
To provide an intensified study environment for suspended students.
To prevent excessive unexcused absences.
To improve the overall discipline within the school.
To provide a "last chance" for disruptive students to modify their behavior before being suspended (out-of-school) or before expulsion.
To provide materials which will assist the student in modifying disruptive behavior.
PROCEDURES:
Each student shall receive a copy of the in-school suspension policies.
Parents shall be required to sign that they have read the rules and regulations.
Procedural due process shall be the same as for all discipline.
Explain to the students the reason for the punishment.
Allow the student to explain his/her actions.
Tell the student the number of days for in-school suspension.
Give the student a copy of the rules for in-school suspension.
The principal shall notify the parent that a parent/principal conference will be mandatory before placement into the in-school suspension program. If the parent cannot be reached the student shall be informed that the conference must take place the following morning. If the parent cannot be reached, a student may be temporarily placed for a portion of the day. Failure on the part of the parent to attend this conference shall result in out-of-school suspension until the conference is held. No credit shall be given for work missed as a result of out-of-school suspension.
Failure on the part of the student to abide by the rules the in-school suspension shall result in either:
Additional days of in-school suspension.
Out-of-school suspension.
Expulsion.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments to in-school suspension shall be made by the principal, assistant principal, or principal's designee for those offenses outlined in the student handbook as warranting suspension from school.
RULES:
Students shall go directly to the in-school suspension upon arrival at school. Suspended students shall not visit with other students before school.
Students shall not leave the classroom during the school for any reason, other than for supervised lunch activities.
There shall be no visitors in the in-school suspension classroom.
Students who are late shall have time added in the in-school suspension program.
There shall be no talking to other students. Students shall be required to bring all necessary materials; books, notebook paper, pencils, etc.
Students assigned to the in-school suspension shall be prohibited from participating in or attending any extracurricular activities.
Students shall remain busy the entire day.
All work must be completed each day and returned to supervisor.
Students assigned to the in-school suspension may bring their lunch or dine with their class in the lunchroom at designated times under strict supervision.
Failure on the part of the student to observe these rules shall result in further disciplinary action.
Teachers shall provide lesson assignments to the in-school suspension supervisor each day prior to school beginning. The supervisor shall collect all completed assignments and forward it to the students' teachers for grading.
