GENERAL LEAVES AND ABSENCES
PERSONAL LEAVE
Teachers and other employees of the LaSalle Parish School Board, except those who receive annual leave (vacation time), shall be allowed up to four (4) days absence during each school year to be used for such purposes as may be determined by the individual employee without loss of pay. Personal leave shall be charged to and deducted from current and/or accumulated sick leave as of the date personal leave is taken. Personal leave shall not be accumulated from year to year, nor shall personal leave be compensated for upon death or retirement or paid in any other manner except as provided by law.
Persons wishing to take personal leave shall notify the principal of the school in which he/she is employed or his/her staff supervisor of his/her intention to take such personal leave at least twenty-four (24) hours before personal leave will be taken. All employees requesting personal leave must submit a Request for Leave form to the principal/immediate supervisor for approval.
LEAVE WITHOUT PAY
The LaSalle Parish School Board may grant leaves of absence without pay for periods not exceeding one (1) year to any regularly employed teacher or other employee, who requests such leave in writing, whenever in the discretion of the School Board such leave is in the best interest of the public school system. The granting of such leaves shall not affect any tenure rights which the applicant may have acquired.
Requests for leave of absence without pay shall be submitted to the Superintendent or his/her designee, in writing, at least fifteen (15) days prior to the effective date of the leave. The leave request shall be presented to the School Board for its consideration.
The School Board may reassign an employee taking leave without pay to a teaching, administrative, or similar position within the person's area of certification or job responsibility if a vacancy occurs. Such reassignment shall be effected in accordance with the School Board's transfer policy and procedures.
ABSENCES DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
It shall be the policy of the LaSalle Parish School Board that whenever it is necessary for personnel to leave the school premises for school or non‑school business, he/she shall report such absence as follows:
Supervisory Personnel
The School Board shall require supervisory personnel leaving the office on school business to notify the secretary and receptionist as to their whereabouts.
Principals
School Business:
Any principal leaving the school for two (2) hours or less shall notify the school secretary and assistant principal (if there is one) as to his/her whereabouts.
If the principal expects to be away from school for more than two (2) hours, he/she shall notify the Superintendent/designee (as well as the school secretary and assistant principal).
Non-School Business:
All principals must get approval from the Superintendent/designee for each and every occasion when they plan to leave school on non‑school business.
Teachers
Should it be necessary for a teacher or staff member to leave the school during regular working hours, he/she shall have the approval of the principal or assistant principal.
The School Board may deduct from a teacher's pay for tardiness, provided tardiness caused loss of time from official duties on more than two (2) occasions and for a period of one hour or more during the school year. Pay deductions shall be based on one day's pay pro-rated to the period of tardiness.
SCHOOL AND DAY CARE CONFERENCE AND ACTIVITIES LEAVE
An employer may grant any employee of the school system leave from work of up to a total of sixteen (16) hours during any twelve (12) month period to attend, observe, or participate in conferences or classroom activities related to the employee's dependent children for whom he/she is the legal guardian that are conducted at the child's school or day care center, if the conferences or classroom activities cannot reasonably be scheduled during the nonwork hours of the employee. An employee who wishes to request such leave shall provide a reasonable notice to the employer prior to the leave and make a reasonable effort to schedule the leave so as not to unduly disrupt the operations of the employer.
An employer is not required to pay an employee for any time taken as leave for conferences and school activities. However, an employee shall be permitted to substitute any accrued vacation time or other appropriate paid leave for any leave taken as provided here.
ELECTION COMMISSIONERS
An employee appointed to serve as an election commissioner or clerk may be granted a leave of absence for the purpose under the following conditions:
The employee shall notify the Superintendent within five (5) days following the publication of the official list of commissioners and clerks and request that a leave of absence be granted to him/her.
If the leave of absence is granted, it is understood that the employee will be docked the amount paid to the substitute. It will be the responsibility of the principal or supervisor in charge to employ the substitute.
